I am a 19-year-old college student responding to the article ”An opportunity for choice” (Aug. 10). I object to the idea that a $1,000 voucher be given to certain families to attend a school of their choice. I think this would seriously worsen the situation of the public school system.

I attended Lane Technical High School, an outstanding school. I compare my education to that of schoolmates who attended private high schools, and I laugh in disbelief. Their parents spent thousands of dollars for a so-called better education and, in my opinion, they were ripped off!

Instead of giving families $1,000, it should be put toward teachers`

salaries. Hire additional teachers who are really qualified and weed out those who are too old or not qualified.

I believe you can get a good education wherever you go, if you want to learn. Giving the poor money for private schools is only another democratic liberal idea, telling them it`s not their fault they don`t have a good education. Go ahead and blame the schools. I think it`s time to put the blame where it belongs: on the parents and students themselves.
