In response to recent stories which stated that 21 public university academic degree programs were scheduled to be eliminated at the Board of Governors universities, the number of degree programs to be eliminated is inaccurate and misleading.
Chicago State University is losing only three bachelor`s degree programs, those in dietetics, radiation therapy and medical sonography. The program in medical sonography was never activated due to a lack of funding since its approval nearly seven years ago.
We have an outstanding bachelor`s degree program in art at CSU, and were deeply disturbed by the number of calls we received from students who read your articles and thought the program was being eliminated. Under the direction of Robert Weitz, chairman of art and design, curriculum revisions were made several years ago. Certain study concentrations were dropped and others added. In geography, only the option in urban geographic studies was eliminated; the degree program in geography remains.
As we weather severe budgetary constraints at CSU, we are determined that our more than 8,500 students not be shortchanged. Our faculty and administrative staff have worked hard to build relationships of support and trust with our student body.
