Tribune architecture critic Paul Gapp was a remarkably eloquent champion of design excellence. His writings opened the eyes of his readers to look more critically at their world-their cities, streets, marketplaces and homes.

However, criticism for Paul never meant tearing down. Instead, he challenged his readers-architects and public alike-to give not simply better, but their best. And he showed the way by the example of his writings.

We have lost the easy daily access we had to his passion, his insight and his wit. But not his ideals. These live on in the words he wrote and, most important, in the great metropolis he helped make even more beautiful and humane because he cared so much for his city by the lake.
