I found Jane Meredith Adams` recent article about the 500th anniversary of Columbus to be pandering to the American Indian and offensive to understanding.

The article listed horrors that Europeans have perpetrated against the American Indian, but there was no mention of similar relationships between Indian tribes. Massacres, forced relocations and lost culture, along with sexism and desecration of burial grounds, were going on long before Columbus. A large photo of Aztec dancers in prayer made no mention of their pre-Columbian ceremony of holding beating human hearts to the sun. Why are Europeans the only ones to be judged by standards of decency?

Finally, the term ”Native American” does not belong solely to the Indian. My parents immigrated from Russia, but I was born in Chicago; am I not a Native American? Is my birthright to be stolen in the name of Political Correctness?
