”Abortion should be available just like mammograms are available . . . ,” said Sue Purrington, executive director of the Chicago chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) (Tribune, Aug. 3). It is apparent
”pro-choice” activists have become so insensitive to the value of human life that they now compare the abortion of an unborn child to the removal of a malignant tumor.
Cancer is an insidious disease that blindly strikes the rich as equally as the poor, the healthy as well as the infirm. Despite the cavalier comparison, the fact remains that more than 90 percent of abortions are unlike cancer-not an act of God but a conscious choice of two individuals to engage in sex at a time when they are unwilling to accept the possible consequences. It saddens and scares me to think that Ms. Purrington sees the birthing of a child as simply a medical decision, onerous and burdensome as an unwanted tumor. Raising a child, although difficult, provides excitement and happiness to one`s life . . . a stark contrast to that of a life-threatening disease.
