Sun Co. will shut down part of its west Tulsa refinery and lay off 200 workers because its fuel operations are not making enough money to cover environmental costs. Seven processing units at the 79-year-old refinery on the west bank of the Arkansas River in Tulsa, will be mothballed, and Sun no longer will market the Sunoco brand of gasoline in Iowa, Oklahoma and Missouri. The company will concentrate its Tulsa operations on its lubricants and wax business, saving about 290 jobs. Sun will continue to sell some fuels to wholesalers and supply independent distributors for six months.
