Your recent story on turning over ”O`Hare`s old Comet” to the Smithsonian Institution carries a tinge of irony.

Another famous aircraft was given to the Smithsonian at O`Hare on July 3, 1949. That plane was the Enola Gay. The Enola Gay carried out the bombing of Hiroshima, bringing a swift end to the war with Japan without a costly invasion. Troops around the world, scheduled for that invasion, breathed a prayer of thanks to the Enola Gay.

During these past 43 years the Smithsonian did not display the Enola Gay. For a time, the unlocked plane was the source of souvenirs for those who did appreciate its historic significance. Restoration is underway.

Dare we hope that the Smithsonian will do better by O`Hare`s old Comet?
