In his letter of Sept. 10, Tim Madler contends that the North American Free Trade Agreement will result in a lowered standard of living for the residents of the U.S. He argues that there will be an ”. . . equalization of standards of living between the United States, Canada and Mexico. . . .” Therefore, his logic concludes, Mexico would be better off while the U.S. and Canada would suffer.

Free markets will result in the creation of more wealth for everyone. Mexico`s economy will boom, while U.S. industries will have access to millions of new consumers hungry for our high quality goods.

The wealth-redistribution theories that Mr. Madler and most Democrats support result only in closed markets, limited growth and ultimately higher taxes.
