My 78-year-old mother has been a ”private pay” resident in a nursing facility for four years. The cost of her care will exceed $41,000 over the next year. Her care and accommodations are no better than other residents who are on Medicaid. The state pays for their care at the rate of $25,550 per year.

My mother and deceased father were both hard-working, middle-class people who had the foresight to save money to take care of themselves, yet now my mother is forced to subsidize the care of others.

When I read how Carol Moseley Braun apparently assisted her mother in sheltering assets so that Medicaid would continue to pick up the tab, it certainly helped me to decide how I`ll vote in November.

Furthermore, when the next gubernatorial election rolls around, I`ll surely remember how Mr. Edgar imposed a $6.30 per day bed tax to further add to my mother`s medical expenses.
