Dr. Jessie Wing, a medical epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, says there may be some confusion in diagnosis between asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in older women. ”It is hard to make the distinction in a doctor`s office, and that may be contributing to the higher death rate from asthma among women in the U.S.,” says Wing. The asthma death rate among women climbed 54 percent during the 1980s from 1.3 deaths per 100,000 to 2.0 per 100,000.
