The Tribune`s Oct. 20 story on parental notification of abortion proves what Mark Twain said: ”There are three kinds of lies-lies, damned lies, and statistics.”

The story concerns a study which found ”that only 7 percent of teenagers . . . might have been better off had they involved a parent” in their decision to abort their child. The other 93 percent ”were considered mature enough to make the decision themselves or would have put themselves at risk by telling a parent.”

On the first claim: How can the Alan Guttmacher Institute judge a girl`s maturity better than her parents? The second: A young girl in a difficult spot is bound to panic about her parents` reaction. Is this sufficient reason to undermine the family?
