Architects ”can`t walk away from the challenge that faces each and every one of us today, the sustainability of life on this planet,” says Susan Maxman, who begins her one-year term in December as the first woman to head the 135-year-old American Institute of Architects. Founder of a Philadelphia firm specializing in work for nonprofit and community groups, Maxman, 53, hopes to use a 1993 convention in Chicago to help make the AIA`s 55,000 members more aware of energy-efficient designs and better use of natural resources.
