If corn-derived ethanol is the wonder fuel Agriculture Secretary Madigan`s Nov. 27 letter claims it to be:
Why is it still burdening the taxpayers with such staggering subsidies, including $100 million for a new federal research program to cut its production cost?
Why did so many gas stations post big signs assuring their customers,
”Our gasoline contains no ethanol”? Why, after years of promotional hype, is it only a minuscule 1 percent of all gasoline sold?
Face it, ethanol can`t compete without government handouts like the Clean Air Act waiver that President Bush granted it Oct. 1. But farm vote aside, insulting the voters` intelligence with such flip-flops ultimately cost him the election. Let`s hope his successor got the message!
