John C. Slowik, 77, a retired restaurateur who was active in Republican politics, died Thursday in Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago. For many years, Mr. Slowik was president of Slowik`s Restaurant and Catering Corp., a popular family-run restaurant at Belmont and Milwaukee Avenues. The restaurant, which the family sold in 1977 and which included a 60-foot mahogany bar, was featured in a 1972 Chicago Tribune Magazine article about the disappearing neighborhood tavern. Mr. Slowik was a Republican candidate for state representative in 1980 and a Robert Dole delegate to the 1988 Republican convention. Mr. Slowik`s family said he was active in several volunteer causes and took children from St. Hedwig`s Orphanage on field trips to baseball games and other events. He is survived by his wife, Agnes; three daughters, Theresa Blasi, Mary Gonzalez and Agnes Hipwell; one son, Vincent; a brother; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home, 7812 N. Milwaukee Ave., Niles. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, 7211 W. Talcott Rd.
