A major dispute in breast cancer screening concerns routine mammography for women under 50, but Dr. Suzanne W. Fletcher, an editor of Annals of Internal Medicine, recommends concentrating on what is known: Studies have shown that routine breast cancer screening reduces mortality as much as 39 percent among women over age 50. She urges internists, major providers of medical care for women over 50 to recommend mammograms for patients in this age group and to learn to perform proper breast examinations on patients.
