In response to a letter on Jan. 12 in which the writer suggested converting Meigs Field into the infamous third airport, it would never work. The amount of landfill required for a project of this magnitude would be beyond belief. Filling in a lake to make dry land is not, by any means, cheap.

Furthermore, imagine adding all the traffic of a major airport into the already chaotic downtown load. I wouldn’t drive downtown if you paid me to.

The noise from a large jet is thunderous. (I live next door to O’Hare.) The added noise would drive every last person working downtown insane. Last, building runways facing directions other than north-south would be very limited, if not impossible. Using Meigs Field as a major airport for commuters would never be possible.
