Hanging around the old pool hall used to be considered strictly for men. No longer.

When some of the world’s top pool players meet in the finals of the Kasson Game Tables Chicago Classic Sunday, none will be men. They are all professional women players, competing for $26,000 in the nine-ball, double-elimination tournament.

Top-ranked players Ewa Mataya, currently No. 1 among women players, and Vivian Villarreal and Robin Bell lead the contingent in the Chicago games. And Shari Stauch of Bloomingdale, currently ranked 26th on the tour, will be the only local pro in this tournament, sanctioned by the Women’s Professional Billiard Association.

Forty-eight top competitors have convened at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Hotel on the second stop of the 1993 Classic Billiard Tour. The final match takes place at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Marriott, 540 N. Michigan Ave. Tickets: $10 at the door. Information: 312-559-1212.
