Coinciding with Monday’s start of the 1993 Chicago thoroughbred season at Sportsman’s Park are changes in scene and schedule for the standardbreds.
Maywood Park, the state’s pioneer pari-mutuel harness track, will begin its 47th year of racing with a spring meeting that opens Monday night and continues through May 8.
Racing is scheduled nightly from Monday through Saturday.
The return of the runners and the harness horses’ move from Hawthorne Race Course to Maywood is having an impact on standardbred racing at Balmoral Park.
Balmoral’s new schedule calls for racing three days a week-Friday and Saturday, starting at 7:45 p.m., and Sunday, beginning at 6 p.m.
On Friday and Saturday, the Maywood-Balmoral dual simulcasts will resume, and races from the tracks will be presented on an alternating basis.
Maywood will telecast its races to Balmoral for betting, and vice-versa.
The major harness race of the spring will be Maywood’s $100,000 Windy City Pace, scheduled for May 8.
