In recognition of International Women’s Day, women are being asked to gather at Federal Plaza downtown on Monday to protest crimes against girls and women in the war-ravaged former Yugoslavia.
A coalition of more than 40 women’s organizations will join the candlelight vigil, beginning at 5 p.m. Monday in an effort by the Commission for Women’s Equality of the American Jewish Congress to draw attention to rape and assault in the region, said Ellen Mayer, staff legal counsel for the organization.
During the protest, women will read testimony from women who have been raped or sexually assaulted during the war.
The vigil and demonstration also are sponsored by the Americans for Bosnian Orphans, Chicago Catholic Women, Clergy and Laity Concerned, Croatian Women-Branch No. 1, National Organization for Women and numerous other women`s organizations.
Protesters will assemble at Federal Plaza, 230 S. Dearborn St. Information: 312-332-7355.
