It is quite ironic that in a recent letter 19th Ward Ald. Ginger Rugai is critical of the new hours of the Chicago Public Library. She states that those aggrieved by the reduction in hours would be schoolchildren. This reeks of self-serving hypocrisy in light of Ald. Rugai’s strident opposition to the much-needed expansion and improvement at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Science, which is located in her ward.
This sorely needed expansion would benefit a largely minority student body, and the stand she has taken to block expansion is based on the intolerance of the ward’s residents.
Ald. Rugai could prove that she is really concerned about the welfare of students and approve Public Building Commission funds to expand and upgrade the high school.
However, if one is compelled to write to the governor I suggest that they also drop a note to Ald. Rugai to let her know that the injustice of her impeding improvements for one of the city’s few successful public schools is as harmful to students as the proposed reduction in library hours.
