Anyone who has been apartment hunting in the suburbs is probably used to seeing the standard sliding glass door that leads to the standard patio or balcony.
At Century Point Apartments in Glendale Heights, you have your choice of the standard patio or balcony, but there is no sliding glass door. Instead you’ll find a French door leading outdoors. While it may be a small difference, it is certainly a refreshing decorative touch.
This community, which encompasses 38 buildings and 228 units, is unique in another way: It offers only two-bedroom apartments. The one we visited is, at 980 square feet, the largest available. A smaller unit has 870 square feet and rents for $665. The three-story buildings are constructed of dark-brown brick and are centered around landscaped courtyards. Although the only outdoor amenity offered is a swimming pool, the interiors of these apartments make up for that.
A touch of `France’
As you enter the apartment, you face the living/dining area. At one end are the French doors, which, besides being aesthetically appealing, tend to be less drafty than sliding glass doors. At about the center of the 13 1/2-by-21 1/2-foot room is a fireplace finished in a rustic cedar. It’s gas, so you don’t have to lug logs inside to build a cozy fire or clean stray soot or ashes from the carpet.
Just next to the fireplace is the dining area, which is big enough for a four-seat table and chairs. But putting a dining table here may not be necessary. That’s because the kitchen, which is separated from this area by an oak counter, is huge. At 180 square feet, the kitchen is big enough to hold a six-seat dining table and chairs and still have plenty of room to spare. That means you could put a desk or occasional table in the dining area, if you choose.
The color scheme throughout this apartment is neutral. The walls are off-white and the carpeting, in the living areas and bedrooms, is beige. In the kitchen, the linoleum floor is cream. The appliances, including the dishwasher, are almond, as are the countertops.
Included in the kitchen is an under-the-cabinet microwave oven as well as a large double window that admits natural light and, when opened in combination with the French doors, would also allow a breeze to cool the entire living room and kitchen area. Also in the kitchen is a room air conditioner and a second, outside door that leads to the basement-and the laundry facilities-and to the courtyard.
To reach the bedrooms, you walk out of the kitchen past the counter that separates it from the living area, and take a right. You pass a large, double coat closet and enter a short hallway. The two bedrooms are located at opposite ends of this hallway. In between them is a linen closet and the bathroom.
The bathroom features the same linoleum as the kitchen, an oak vanity with a cream, marblelike top and Hollywood-style lighting.
In the master bedroom, which measures 11 1/2 by 14 feet, is a whole wall of closet space. The room is lighted by a double window that, depending on the apartment’s location, overlooks the courtyard or parking lot.
The second bedroom, which is 11 1/2 by 12, also has a double window and a double closet.
While there are not many extra amenities, there is an outdoor pool. And just a few steps away is Dunteman Park, a small play area for children .
The Century Point Apartments are located just off Army Trail Road. They are near Interstate Highways 355 and 290, Illinois Highway 53 and Metra train stations in Glen Ellyn and Roselle
