In your Feb. 12 edition, David Silverman writes that the raccoons accidentally captured in the traps set on the Ft. Sheridan beach “paid for their curiosity with their lives.” This statement is incorrect.
The traps being used are large, humane box traps on loan from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center animal warden. The traps are wire mesh cages with spring-loaded doors, and are designed to capture animals without injury. When discovered, the raccoons in question were released unharmed.
