Having made such a success of improving our economy by giving tax breaks to the rich, professional economists now want to improve highway safety by raising speed limits. In “How speed limits can cost lives” (Op-Ed, Feb. 8), Gary M. Galles shows why it is unwise to let economists provide input into any real-world public policy.

Despite what Mr. Galles asserts, the fact is that the preponderance of research confirms what experience, common sense and safety professionals all tell us: Highway speed kills. The studies show that the 55 m.p.h. speed limit saves lives! The Tribune’s dissemination of Mr. Galles’ contrary delusion is an irresponsible and dangerous disservice to the public.
