Recently I received a pamphlet at my home detailing the Illinois Telephone Assistance Program, and was shocked to find that the federal government is wasting money buying telephones for people.

Telephones in the house are not a necessity of life, especially since there are such things as pay telephones. I know that it’s terrible, horrifying, appalling, even repulsive that 5 percent of all households in the United States do not have telephones, but these are hard times.

The country is going broke. Hard working people are losing their jobs and having to forego such luxury items as health care and college educations for their children.

President Clinton wants us to tell him specific areas he can cut, because he can’t find an ounce of waste or fat in the federal budget himself; well, this is specific federal spending that he can cut.
