James T. Helverson, 89, retired vice president of the Washington National Insurance Co., died Saturday in a Des Moines, Iowa, hospital. Mr. Helverson was head of the firm’s accident and health underwriting department. He retired in 1969 and later moved back to Des Moines, where he had lived before coming to Chicago in 1937. Survivors include his wife, Katherine; a daughter, Sandra DeVogelear; a son, Alan; two stepsons, James Reynolds and Robert Reynolds; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother; and a sister. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the N.H. Scott & Hebblewaite Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Rd., Glenview. Services will follow.
