Quicker cutbacks: Troubled jet engine-maker Pratt & Whitney gave a rapid-fire timetable for its plan to cut its work force by 10,600, saying 7,600 of those jobs will be eliminated by October. The moves will reduce total employment to about 30,000. Pratt officials also confirmed that they will close an unspecified number of manufacturing plants and launch a major restructuring to cope with a severe slump in the commercial engine market.
