Cross-country service from Los Angeles to Miami will be inaugurated by Amtrak April 3, with stops at New Orleans; Biloxi-Gulfport, Miss.; Mobile, Ala.; and Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville and Orlando, Fla. The new service is aimed at leisure and family traffic to tourist centers along this southern corridor. . . . A web of high-speed train connections in Germany and close cooperation between the railways and the airlines could make as many as 50,000 annual domestic flights unnecessary by 2010, according to a new study by Herbert Baum of Cologne University. Baum predicted that even without special measures, 8 to 12 percent of airline passengers would switch to trains by 2000.
