– Jack probably was terrified when his beanstalk grew to the skies. If you have fruits and vegetables of frightening proportions in your garden next summer, take pictures of them for the monthly Scary Contest at Organic Gardening magazine.

You may tamper with the plants to make them look scary: Feel free to draw ghoulish faces on your gourds or pose your tomatoes in scenes from “Friday the 13th.”

Send entries to Jeff Cox at Organic Gardening, 33 E. Minor St., Emmaus, Pa. 18098. First prize is a year’s subscription.

– “Green and Growing: An Urban Gardening Fair” will be held Saturday and next Sunday at the Field Museum of Natural History and will feature exhibits, display gardens and seminars on such topics as poor soil and organizing community projects. The museum is at Roosevelt Road and Lake Shore Drive. Fair hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults for one day, $8 for both days. Two children under 18 will be admitted free with each paying adult. For more information, call 312-922-9410.

– The Lincoln Park Home Show Saturday and next Sunday will feature more than 100 decorating and remodeling exhibits, workshops and seminars on such topics as flower arranging and urban gardening. Chicago landscape architects will discuss small gardens at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The show, sponsored by the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce, will be held in the Alumni Hall of De Paul University, Belden at Sheffield Avenues. Admission is $4, free for children under 16. Call 312-880-5200.
