I would like to say to Alan and Bettina Birkner (“Holiday offensives,” March 1) that I am not offended by the fact that many state employees have not received pay increases in two years, nor by the fact that a recent college graduate may receive a higher salary than someone who has held a routine clerical job for a period of years.

The Birkners seem to forget that many graduates in the last two years have not been able to find employment in their fields and many employees in the private area have suffered layoffs, wage cuts and loss of benefits. For the most part, public employees were spared these hurts.
