Moving into the two-story home at 999 Chapel Court North in Glen Ellyn’s Sunnybrook subdivision would in some ways be like buying a newly built home.
Although no longer brand new, the 1987 house was built in one of the last corners of Glen Ellyn to be developed, said Larry Michael, listing agent for Prudential Preferred Properties, at a recent open house. The neighborhood is only eight years old, he said.
Bulldozers can still be seen on some of the few remaining undeveloped plots in the area, which is not far from the College of Du Page. Unlike some subdivisions, not all of the trees here have been cleared, but remain in clusters in some corners. As you approach 999 Chapel Court North, one of those peeks out from the north side of the house.
The home has brown siding, beige shutters and trim and a cedar shake roof. A dormer and gables are contemporary nods to the Victorian style. The house is on the market for $264,000.
Inside the wood front door is an entryway with a beige tile floor. Straight ahead is a coat closet and to the right, a 16-by-14 living room, which has light beige carpeting, off-white walls and wood crown moldings. Two windows face west.
The living room opens onto a 13-by-12 dining room, with the same carpet, walls and molding, plus a wood chair rail. Two windows look out on a vast, treeless field.
An acre of land
The house is set on an acre of land, much of it in the back yard, which is bounded by a wood fence. Just beyond the fence, a row of steel towers support Commonwealth Edison power lines. Beyond the power lines is open land owned by Du Page County, Michael said, and then a stretch of Interstate Highway 355 on the horizon. The same view meets your gaze out of every eastern window.
From the dining room, a doorway leads into the 12-by-10 kitchen, which has a pantry and a built-in desk along one wall and wood cabinets above and below almond-colored counters, one of which has an overhang that could be used as a breakfast counter.
But it’s not necessary, because on the other side of the counter is an 11-by-8 breakfast area. Sunlight pours in from a bowed window looking out onto the back yard.
The breakfast area opens onto a 19-by-14 family room with a brick fireplace and a wet bar. Light beige wall-to-wall carpeting covers the floor and wood beams embellish the ceiling. On the east wall, floor-to-ceiling windows flank a door leading out onto a cement patio.
Continue past the family room down a hallway off the kitchen and you pass a door leading to the unfinished basement. The house has gas forced air heat and central air conditioning.
Next to the basement is a door leading to a two-car garage. Across the hall is a closet and straight ahead is a laundry room with wood cabinets above the washer and dryer and a door leading outside.
Back down the hallway and on the way back to the front door is a half bathroom, with a light beige tile floor, a neutral floral print wallpaper and a faux marble sink over wood cabinets.
To get to the bedrooms, take the staircase on your left as you enter the house. The same light beige carpeting that runs up the wood stairs extends through all of the second-floor rooms.
To the left of the stairs is the 20-by-24 master bedroom suite. Light streams through windows with northern and western exposures, the latter in a deep alcove in the wall. On the opposite wall are two walk-in closets.
Soaring ceilings
Adjacent is the master bathroom, with a ceiling soaring up high to a skylight over an almond-colored tub built into a tile platform. Across from the tub is a shower behind a glass door. Beige tiles cover the floor and there’s a beige faux marble sink and countertop and wood cabinets.
Next to the master bedroom suite is a linen closet, then another bathroom, which also has a skylight on a tall, sloping ceiling. Here the vanity incorporates two sinks.
Continue down the hallway to a 16-by-11 bedroom with a walk-in closet and two windows looking out on the back yard. Across the hall are an 11-by-11 and a 13-by-12 bedroom, both with windows facing west.
Property taxes were $6,729 in 1991. Residents here can send their children to Westfield Elementary School, Glencrest Junior High and Glenbard South High School.
