With “Point of No Return,” Bridget Fonda can now proudly take her place in the “Thelma and Louise Dangerous Women Hall of Fame.” Who said only men like to blow up buildings?
Maggie (Fonda) is a young Washington, D.C., gang member who kills a cop and is sentenced to death, but there’s a catch; if she agrees to work for a government agency as an assassin, she won’t be killed. She goes through a rigorous training process, and once she’s civilized she’s given a new identity from which she must be prepared to go shoot diplomats at a moment’s notice. However, she enjoys her new life a little too much, due mostly to studmuffin boyfriend (Dermot Mulroney), and dreams of escape . . . but it’s not that simple.
This has every element of the typical action/thriller/romance; explosions, espionage, designer outfits, cheesy dialogue, the works. However, the skill with which all these required elements were executed and the grace with which the program flowed got it a 9.0 from the Romanian judge.
Sure, there’s plenty of gratuitous violence, but at least the audience isn’t bored; Bridget Fonda is no Ah-nold, but what she lacks in bulk she makes up for with scary weapons, martial arts, and pentup hostility.
Yes, folks, it’s a good movie and you should go see it, if only to learn one of life’s more important truths: Never mess with a woman with a bazooka. (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
