(Regarding “The Real San Francisco,” Feb. 21) No self-respecting “local” would be caught dead referring to San Francisco as “Frisco” in this day and age. I believe locals prefer the moniker “SF” to “Frisco” and would even prefer good ol’ “San Francisco” to either.

We (not the San Francisco native who wrote the story) used “Frisco” in the jump headline for two reason: 1) “San Francisco” didn’t fit, and 2) columnist Herb Caen, perhaps San Francisco’s most famous “local,” says it’s OK. Caen, once the leader of the don’t-call-us-Frisco crusade, shook up good ol’ Frisco by dropping his opposition to the use of the nickname a decade ago.
