Les Aspin is doing a fine job handling the military base closures. Recent newspaper stories indicated which would be closed.

What caught my eye was the $5.6 billion savings over the Pentagon’s six-year implementation program. What floored me was the commander-in-chief’s announcement on March 11 that he would spend $20 billion to “ease the pain of military cutbacks.”

Maybe there is something in the “new math” that I don’t understand.

How can you save $5.6 billion when you will spend $20 billion? It looks like a $14.4 billion expenditure, not a savings.

If closing bases costs taxpayers $14.4 billion, let’s leave them all open and save real money. Les Aspin can’t do his job if his boss is messing with the numbers.
