Let’s set Thornton Fractional South High School straight: The issue isn’t whether your student body is 8 percent, 18 percent, or zero percent black. The Confederate battle flag, as a school symbol, insults not just black Americans, but all Americans.

In addition to the horrors of slavery, that shameful symbol stands for the senseless slaughter of 600,000 mostly white Americans in a bloody conflict that devastated a region of our country and impoverished its citizens of all races for a century afterward. It is appalling that an American community would devote even five minutes to debating the pros and cons of displaying the ultimate un-American symbol.
