Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. has announced its all-new high-performance Supra will go on sale June 7 with a base price of $33,900 for the 220-horsepower normally aspirated model and $39,900 for the 320-horsepower twin-turbo model. . . . Responding to assertions of corruption in its retail-dealer and distribution network, Honda Motor Co. has urged its dealers in the U.S. “to work together to reinforce our customers’ trust in the Honda organization and in our business operations.” The company’s statement was sent by computer to the 1,291 Honda and Acura dealers in the U.S. after the New York Times published allegations by some dealers and workers that Honda executives had been bribed so dealers could secure more cars and franchises. . . . Malcolm Bricklin, who brought Subaru, the acrylic-bodied Bricklin and the Yugo to the U.S., is working on an electric car. Bricklin and his partners have formed Electric Vehicles Corp. in Van Nuys, Calif., which has turned out at least eight prototypes, said Richard Mayer, director of electric vehicle technology. . . . Seventeen foreign automakers, including Ferrari and BMW, have joined Ukraine’s Tavria and Russia’s Lada, at the first Kiev auto show, which opened Wednesday. The show features an armored Volvo 940 that “meets NATO’s top security standard” for $290,000. Potential buyers must order cars through their workplace or on the black market.
