Exercise is exercise, whether it’s taken within the climate-controlled environs of a shopping mall or in unpredictable nature.

Twenty-three folks who decidedly prefer the rolling green terrain of an Illinois summer slogged through a rain-muddied path at Ryerson Woods near Deerfield last week, pioneering the Lake County Forest Preserves’ new “Monday Movers” program.

It is designed as an alternative to mall-walking, said naturalist and guide Phil Broder.

Monday’s initial expedition, which involved a leisurely 3.5-mile hike that took about 90 minutes to complete, will be followed by similar hikes at 9 a.m. every Monday through Aug. 23.
