Women’s greater access to higher education is not translating to their presence on college and university faculties, says Judy Touchton, deputy director of the Office of Women in Higher Education at the American Council on Education, a non-profit regulations to end overt discrimination generally are working, Touchton says, but “what needs to be enhanced is the awareness of the subtle ways that people are treated differently because of race, gender and ethnicity.”
