U.S. Sen. Paul Simon is quoted in the June 23 INC. column as crediting the Bulls victory to: “African-Americans and Caucasian-Americans working together to produce a championship team. What we need in society today is all of us working together.”
If Mr. Simon is so concerned with “all of us working together,” why does he separate Americans by such nonsensical classifications? Is this part of the pathetic and purposeless “political correctness” concept that is contaminating America’s political and social thinking?
His compartmentalizing of Americans by ethnic background shows nothing more than a total contempt for, and arrogance toward, all Americans. I find his deliberate effort to pit Americans against Americans offensive-a reflection of the social stereotyping and ethnic prejudice this nation does not need-especially from someone who holds a position of influence.
What next: Caucasian-Male-Under 50-Americans? African-Female-Educated-Americans?
