On June 22, the Tribune’s front page featured the gang-inspired “Jewelry to die for” with a six-by-six inch color picture in a glamorous jewelry-store setting. This respectable retail atmosphere tends to give reinforcement to the social status (and public acceptance) of gangs, “teenagers . . . clutching thick rolls of cash” to buy, for instance, “palm-sized pendants shaped like Uzis and AK-47s” in 10-karat gold.

This kind of recognition is most disturbing. It’s true that the reading public needs to be informed, but not with this strikingly beautiful presentation, invaluable gang-recruitment propaganda.

The Tribune’s decision to feature this article on the front page is, in my opinion, reprehensible.
