Atlanta’s John Smoltz, a controversial choice by his manager for the All-Star Game, allowed five hits in eight innings, extending the Marlins’ season-high losing streak to seven games.
Ron Gant hit his 20th home run and David Justice hit his 19th for the Braves, who broke a three-game losing streak and won for the first time in their past six road games.
Smoltz (8-7) struck out seven to take over the National League lead with 119. He walked one and retired the final nine batters he faced.
“The last thing I wanted to do was go into the All-Star Game with a losing record,” Smoltz said. “I went into this game almost like it was a playoff game.”
The Marlins were among those upset about the choice of Smoltz for the All-Star Game, because Florida’s Chris Hammond (10-4) was bypassed by Braves manager Bobby Cox.
Ryan Bowen (4-9) took the loss.
