Harold Baines homered and drove in three runs as the Orioles took over first place in the AL East. It was Baltimore’s seventh victory in its last nine games.

The lone hit off Ben McDonald (7-8) came in the fourth inning, when Gary Gaetti lined a clean single to left field. McDonald matched his career-high with nine strikeouts and walked three in his first shutout since July 18, 1992.
