The Poet Laureate contest, sponsored by Gwendolyn Brooks, serves an important and vital creative need. Not only are 35 winning students given generous cash awards, but also the chance to appear in print in the Tribune.
The prize-winning poems show great variety in both subject matter and style. They are proof that there is no shortage of talented young poets in the Chicago area. Thanks to Gwendolyn Brooks, their lyrical voices can be heard both loud and strong.
