Residents who have working septic systems will not have to hook up to the city’s sewer system unless the Environmental Protection Agency forces them to do so.
After two hours of debate, the City Council voted 5-1 not to enforce a city code that requires residents to connect to the sewer system. Ald. Lane Moyer voted against the proposal.
Residents will have to comply, however, if the EPA enforces its rules.
That vote came as good news to residents who received notices in July stating the requirement. Residents contested the notices, saying that it is too expensive to make the connection.
