Owners of a controversial composting facility have until Sept. 14 to submit a plan to close the plant, a Cook County judge ruled Tuesday.

Owners of the Composting Corporation of America facility decided last month to shut down the operation after a series of lawsuits and odor complaints by neighbors. But a formal closure plan must be filed, detailing how the remaining compost material on the site will be disposed of, according to Anna Kukec, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

A hearing on the closure plan will be held Oct. 21.
