Coach: Joe Paterno.
Record with team: 247-67-3.
Last year: 7-5.
Returning starters: Five on offense, seven on defense, two kickers.
Players to watch: FB Brian O’Neal, QB John Sacca, DTs Lou Benfatti and Tyoka Jackson, DB Derek Bochna, WR Tisen Thomas.
Top newcomers: QB Kerry Collins, LBs Eric Ravotti and Jeff Perry.
Bill Jauss’ outlook: Paterno says he’s “very edgy-scared to death” about his debut in the Big 10. The league ought to be edgy and scared, too. The Penn State defense, keyed by a tough secondary and tackles Benfatti and Jackson, is a strength. Big dates include Oct. 16 for the Michigan game in Beaver Stadium and-after a week off-the Ohio State game in Columbus on Oct. 30.
