Occupation: Actor.
Birthday: March 17, 1949.
Birthplace: Townsend, Mont.
Current home: Los Angeles.
Marital status: Married 21 years to Carlyn Duffy.
Children: Padraic, 18, and Connor, 14.
Car: A 1993 green Ford Ranger pickup.
Working on: The ABC-TV show “Step by Step.”
The last good movie I saw was: “Sleepless in Seattle.”
I stay home to watch: I prefer old movies, but with two boys and a wife, it’s usually Cosby reruns or ballet specials.
The book I’ve been reading is: “Lincoln at Gettysburg,” by Garry Wills.
Favorite pigout food: Curry.
Favorite childhood memory: Camping and fishing trips. These weren’t Eddie Bauer-style expeditions. We’d throw the rods in the back of the truck and fish for brook trout all day.
Personal hero: Thomas Jefferson. He embodies everything I find admirable in a human being and in an American.
Nobody knows I’m: Actually a very famous movie star who has not had the opportunity to do films.
The worst part of my job is: Confronting the fact that maybe I’m not a movie star because I’m not good enough.
My fantasy is: The family is at our ranch in Oregon, cooking and building and digging and fishing.
The worst advice my mother ever gave me: “Don’t marry Carlyn.” I was a sweet hometown boy, and she was a jaded New York ballerina, already married and older than I.
People who knew me in high school thought I was: Funny but inconsequential.
My most irrational act: Walking around the rain gutter of the roof of the courthouse in my hometown when I was 14 and very stupid.
My friends like me because: I offer friendship with no agenda.
If I weren’t an actor, I’d be: An architect or a carpenter.
My most humbling experience: Coming home, where I realize I’m not a big TV star with lots of people taking care of me. I’m a husband and father and the trash needs taking out.
Three words that best describe me: Sincere, irreverent and honest.
