As Dan Kening states in his profile of Mark Goodman, “it says something about the importance of pop culture in modern life” that the word “wherefore” is often thought to mean “where.” (“Nina Blackwood, wherefore art thou?” Kening asks.)
“Wherefore” means “why.” Juliet, lovesick on her balcony, is not asking, “Romeo, where are you?,” but rather, “Romeo, why are you a Montague (the Capulets’ enemy)?”
