Our public schools are the bedrock of our democracy. How can anyone entertain the idea of “vouchers”?

Hasn’t the awful record of private trade schools taught us anything about the potential for fraud and greed?

These schools not only took student tuition monies but also government loan funds-often delivering inferior or non-education but often still going bankrupt, leaving students further in debt and wasting taxpayers’ money.

How far and how long do we think $2,000 would go for each student? Soon more would be demanded. More suspect groups than sincere educators would open “schools” willy-nilly.

Look at the current Pell Grant mess in New York State where schools forged documents on non-enrolled students, where millions were diverted to mortgages and building by so-called “schools.”

We need to work tirelessly to improve our public schools but vouchers are not the answer.
