Stillman Valley 14, Genoa-King ston 13: When Genoa-Kingston coach Dave Russell looks back at his stellar career, this particular loss, his last, will undoubtedly linger for a long time.

In a game that had enough missed opportunities and momentum swings to fill a season, Stillman Valley (8-3) prevailed by making one of its own mistakes pay off.

After Mark Glendenning’s first-quarter touchdown run sliced Genoa’s lead to 7-6, Stillman Valley coach Kevin O’Neil elected to go for the two-point conversion. The snap to quarterback Jay Williams was bobbled, but Williams regrouped and found Brian Bratta in the end zone to go up 8-7.

In the third quarter, Stillman Valley failed three successive times to score from the Genoa-Kingston 1-yard line.

Genoa-Kingston (9-2) took over and promptly fumbled the ball back two plays later. Stillman Valley capitalized with a 6-yard touchdown pass from David Larson to Ed Haring.

In the fourth quarter, Stillman Valley had first-and-goal at the Genoa-Kingston 4, got down to the 1, but went no further. Later, Genoa-Kingston marched 55 yards in 14 plays, scoring on a fourth-down pass play from Eric Rich to Brent Goedeke that pulled the Cogs within a point. Russell went for the lead with a two-point conversion attempt, but it failed.

Aledo 27, Byron 24: Patrick Lower’s 2-yard TD run with 1:14 left lifted Aledo (11-0) over the state’s top-ranked 2A team. Phil Frankenberry missed a 32-yard field goal for Byron (10-1) with :09 left.
