NAFTA should be addressed on its own. Mike Royko’s columns of Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 use unrelated cases with racist overtones to cloud your readers’ judgment.

If crime along the border is the concern, it should be noted that U.S. Atty. Gen. Janet Reno and her Mexican counterpart Jorge Carpizo met recently and issued a joint statement regarding both countries’ efforts to stop crime.

They acknowledged that cooperation between both legal systems, with the boundaries of sovereignty and respect, are the strongest weapon against crime. On that occasion, Mexico’s attorney general announced the creation of a special legal commission with jurisdiction to prosecute, arraign and punish Mexican citizens who have committed crimes abroad and are currently in Mexico.

NAFTA will fast-forward small business into international trade. It will create new markets for small business. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that small business is what creates jobs in our country. Small business will keep jobs here and employ your readers.

Even President Clinton knows that NAFTA will benefit small business. How else will we be able to pay for his programs and new taxes?
